I really like "adversary/aviary". An interesting choice. I wouldn't immediately have thought of Mrs McFarlane as Oldacre's adversary but, of course, that's what she is.

Thanks! I have been so busy (and I should be concentrating on a certain ACD_Holmesfest thingie... don't tell anyone I'm here!) and couldn't resist the challenge of my first clerihew!

I was actually picturing Holmes as the 'adversary' in question, although Mrs McFarlane fits too.
