“It’s a shame it will be such a quiet wedding,” said Mrs Whittaker. She had grown fond of her American boarder.

“They did not want any fuss,” the Reverend Parker explained.

“I would like to do something to wish them well…” Mrs Whittaker brightened. “I shall put an announcement in The Times!”

The clergyman nodded. “That could do no harm.”

Like you, I was wondering why Slaney would only know about Elsie's whereabouts after the wedding. This is a lovely solution to the conundrum.

It is a slightly ambiguous statement on Slaney's part. I suppose he may not have been saying that it was the marriage that allowed him to find Mrs Cubitt; he may have simply been saying that by the time he found her she was already married to someone else.

But a wedding is a public event - I think it is highly possible that it's what gave Elsie away in some manner.
