Ha, I learned two new words from this clerihew (non-native speaker here). Thank you for those! One does wonder whether Watson made a wise or a foolish decision to not go in with Thurston in the South African securities. Wonderfully original rhymes.

My personal feeling is that Watson was right to be cautious...

Oh, yes, of course ^^" - I think this is 1898, isn't it..? (In the story.) I suppose the original readers would have known immediately the investment was a bad idea.
