Canon Story: The Speckled Band
Title: Poker

Author's Notes: “I am glad to see that Mrs. Hudson has had the good sense to light the fire.”

Mrs. Hudson noticed the poker was slightly twisted and Mr. Holmes explained about the late Dr. Roylott.

“But you shouldn’t have straightened it out!” she scolded. “Showing off to Dr. Watson—you might have injured yourself!”

He blandly denied showing off to anyone but she saw the smile.

Just like the poker, Mr. Holmes’ poker face had a definite curve.

As we've said before, there's little that escapes Mrs Hudson.

Well, that explains a lot! That remarkable demonstration of strength came too late to impress Dr. Roylott--one has to wonder who Holmes WAS trying to impress.

Now we know. ;)

Nice double use of poker

Gives verbal directions to nearest florist and hands her a fiver.

I can't even try for a poker face reading this one. Thank you for another excellent 60.

Holmes wanting to impress Watson in a very manly way is really the only reasonable explanation for the whole poker episode. I love your wording of the last line - beautiful.
