Saltire's trousers were stiff with mud. The Duke would be horribly displeased.

His friend, Caunter, called Lord Leverstoke Father. Saltire tasted the word in his mouth. 'Father.' It felt strange.

New voices were coming through the floorboards from the kitchen. He should scream, get help. But Mrs Hayes had asked him not to.

The Duke would find him... Father would.

So moving! And it includes so well how the Hayes kept Saltire quiet.

I so admire that subtle detail: He doesn't call for help because Mrs. Hayes had asked him not to. There's a sympathy there between two unloved people. Mrs. Hayes presumably is worried that the child may be hurt by her husband if he makes a noise, but Arthur may also be worrying that Hayes will hurt his wife if he finds his hostage gone.
