Our friend Inspector Hopkins was angry.  “You are fortunate that Miss Violet de Merville had such an illustrious protector.  Had circumstances been different, Mr Holmes, and you had committed burglary on behalf of Kitty Winter, we would have seen you standing in the dock.  I look forward to the day when justice is indeed blind and all are treated equally.”

While our friend Inspector Hopkins certainly is justified in his anger, justice sometimes is not done a favour by acting legal instead of just. ;)

It's nice to see that Hopkins isn't blind in his admiration of Holmes - and I applaud his desire for there to be the same rules for everyone.

But, though Watson gives this as the reason, I do wonder if Holmes avoided trial simply because of the "illustrious client" and because the burglary was for the sake of a well-connected young woman. I like to think the prosecutors took a broader view. After all, the stolen book would be evidence and Holmes might have ensured they saw it before making a decision about a trial. Maybe Gruner dropped his complaint to avoid the contents of the book becoming public.

I think Hopkins anger isn't that justice wasn't done, but that in different circumstances, Holmes would not have escaped.

Possibly. Gruner would have a lot to lose if the contents became public, but I'm still not sure that Holmes would be able to avoid prosecution just because what he'd stolen could be evidence.
