The only resemblance Dick Stephens bore to the character in my tale was the colour of his skin. Stephens was an unpleasant and dangerous man, whose intelligence meant Holmes had been unable to prove his involvement in certain particularly violent cases. Holmes had requested my inclusion of Stephens’ alter ego as a warning that we were aware of his actions.
