“Stole,” he said, “and throwed away before they caught ‘im. We’ll sell it, we will, and eat for days!”

“Just a piece o’ glass,” I told him. “You ain’t never found no ruby.”

But Ol’ Wat, he said diff’rent. Bought it right quick. We split the take.

What a great idea ^^ After the deaths, double-crossing and miserly hoarding in the jewels' history, it's nice to see two people in desperate need getting a bit of money out of one of them. And as laurose8 says - wonderful narrator's voice ^^

Though "The Sign of Four" ended with loss of the jewels as far as Smallwood, Holmes and Wason were concerned, the story of the jewels goes on! I loved seeing this glimpse of what happened to one of them.

You wrote the perfect ending for SIGN, after we leave Sherlock Holmes with his cocaine-bottle. The mudlark is such a deserving finder of the ruby. A wonderful take from the novel, and brilliantly executed in 60 words – language, dialogue, rhythm. Wow.
