Were it not for the elaborate items of jewellery, Watson might have been inclined to consider Holmes' outlandish tales mere fabrication - the kind of thing one might tell a friend to disguise the fact that one has spent two weeks indoors, oscillating between the cocaine bottle and the hair-trigger.

But the trinkets existed, and so, he supposed, all was well.
