Fate

Watson was to be married in a few weeks, so he was sympathetic when Lord St Simon found himself in an instant deprived of both the wife and fortune upon which he had depended.

Although it would be a bitter blow to him, I could almost find it in myself to hope that a similar fate might befall my Watson.

I can imagine Holmes would see the advantages of Watson remaining single, but at the same time acknowledging how happy Mary and his friend were together.

I think Holmes would feel bad for thinking this...but yes:-)

Awww, poor Holmes. I can just see him thinking this when one of his melancholy fits is on him. It certainly would be convenient for him if Watson's bride would just disappear! Then nothing has to change. It's a selfish and childish thought, of course, but who doesn't secretly entertain those from time to time?

Well-done!

I'm touched by the use of "almost". In the end, Holmes isn't a selfish man - he's rather noble himself.

I love the almost ... detached, I guess(?) nature of that second paragraph. Certainly dispassionate, which Holmes would clearly be. It seemed really in keeping with his character.
