I've had a rummage about online and I must say that I can't seem to find any "official" theories about why exactly Holmes and Watson were away from Baker Street. I'd be interested too to find out if there are.
I suspect though the dull truth is that the "events" were mundane and that's the only reason Watson didn't mention them.
