In early April 1895 Holmes shook me awake on a cold dark morning. “Watson, we are leaving town for some time. Immediately.”

I blinked. “A case?”

“Among other reasons. Lestrade has let slip something. Come, into your clothes at once!”

Not till we were well ensconced in a university town, far from London, did I hear of Oscar Wilde’s arrest.

So you think it was Holmes's impetus to leave? He seems so uncomfortable in their temporary setting, I thought maybe Watson had to convince him. But you make a good point, Holmes would be the one to get a heads up (intentional or unintentional?) from Lestrade about the arrest.

What an ingenious connection to make. I suppose Holmes wanted to just get them out of public view for a while, in case there was a witch hunt and people started to look at their relationship a little more closely. No wonder Holmes was in such an ill temper when they were staying in the university town.

Apparently a lot of London's unofficial couples fled for the Continent in the days after Wilde's arrest. Trust Holmes to presage them all.

Whether they were staunch companions or a little more than that, Holmes would know that London would soon be too warm for both of them during such hysterically homophobic times. University research was far more in character than would be fleeing to the Continent (as so many homosexual Londoners did in the days after Wilde's arrest).
