Welcome once again to my poetry page!
I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then be inspired to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.
This week my featured form is the chastushka.
The Poets Collective gives this definition:
A Russian quatrain form. The name derives from the Russian, meaning ”to speak fast”. Covering subjects that range across the whole human experience and written in a manner that is usually satirical, ironic or humorous, this is the Russian equivalent to the limerick.
The form is composed of a single quatrain, though often they are placed together with others in a string. In either case, each quatrain is a complete self contained unit.
The most common rhyme scheme is a,b,a,b though a,b,c,b is also fairly common. The a,a,b,b rhyme scheme is fairly rare.
The form is written using trochaic tetrameter. Though it is common to use catalectic final feet in a line, giving a strongly stressed ending.
Content wise chastushki cover all subjects, though the style is usually satirical, ironic or humorous, tending towards lewd.
Traditionally they are recited to music. If they are in a string, then there is a musical interlude between them to give the audience time to laugh.
For those of us who are not Mrs. P:
Trochaic tetrameter is TUM te TUM te TUM te TUM te.
Trochaic tetrameter with a catalectic final foot is TUM te TUM te TUM te TUM (i.e. you drop the final unstressed syllable).
For those of us who are not Doctor Watson:
Being lewd is not absolutely necessary.
Here is my example poem:
Shooting bullets whilst inside?
That is all beyond my ken.
As my tenant says (with pride),
Reason’s only found in men.
As always, this is simply something to consider for the future. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

A chastushka
Date: 2015-10-11 07:20 am (UTC)Holmes’s habit’s past a joke
Coram watches, looking pensive
As his cache goes up in smoke

Cigarettes (four) smoked fast,
Leave an ash-trail at last –
Just like Norwood, still here. That is that!

My only reminder, where he dripped on the floor
