“Yeah?”

“…with a man so evil he’d lock you in a box and watch you die just to line his own pocket.”

“You kill ‘em?”

“Nah, walked right into that saloon and set ol’ Rex on him.”

The dog lifted its head and woofed.

That's a rather clever interpretation - I had automatically assumed that Peters was attacked by a man.

And I don't know if it was deliberate but I rather like that parallel you have set up. Peters doesn't want to get his hands dirty but will indirectly murder people. But in contrast there's something rather noble about his attacker's attitude - "I wouldn't sully myself by directly assaulting you. You only deserve having my dog set on you."

I think I was thinking that a dog attack would be more vicious than just fisticuffs (although a torn ear would most likely require some kind of weapon, such as broken bottle, if done by a human) than a human one, sort matching the low nature of Peters. But it works, either way. Thank you.

Very believable, and definitely a good thing to do with Peters. I love with a man so evil he’d lock you in a box and watch you die just to line his own pocket.
