Oh, yes - there's that implication in SIGN that Watson has lived in Australia. Great idea ^^ Perhaps he is abroad, introducing his new wife to his relatives and that's why Holmes thinks of himself as having been abandoned for a wife. If Watson had still been near at hand, perhaps Holmes wouldn't have minded too much that they weren't actually living together.
