Considering how much time Holmes and Watson spent together even when Watson was married to Mary, I can't see another marriage would have caused that much of a problem.

Equally I can't imagine why Holmes and Watson shouldn't have retired together (I write about the two of them quite a bit in Sussex Retirement after all).

This is where my theory of Watson/Lestrade retiring to the Westcountry fits particularly well, but I realise not everyone holds with this.

And I agree, the plot seems rather unsubstantial.
