rachelindeed did make the very good point on the BLAN discussion that perhaps the second Mrs. Watson had different expectations from Mary. I don't think Watson would ever have gone on an adventure without Mary's blessing - and Mary was very easygoing on that score. The second Mrs. Watson might not have been so keen for Watson to abandon her and his practice at a moment's notice.
Obviously, if Watson was married (to an unknown woman or to Lestrade ^^), then he wouldn't have retired with Holmes. But if Watson was unattached... Then I really don't understand why he and Holmes parted - whatever the specifics of their relationship.
