Author's Notes: “Ring for our boots and tell them to order a cab.” As has been pointed out elsewhere, this is an amusingly ambiguous sentence… (And apologies to all Cockneys.)


“Cab!”

Right-Boot waved primly.

“Nah!” said Left-Boot. “Yer’ve gotta make a fuss to get a flounder!”

Right-Boot turned and stared. “A ‘flounder’?”

“Don’t worry, chaps! We’ll do it!”

A jacket, waistcoat and trousers appeared and started flapping at the traffic.

“See,” said Left-Boot. “Dey’ll bloody get the cab!”

Right-Boot frowned. “Why?”

Left-Boot grinned at him. “Well… Dat’s Mr. ‘Olmes’s ‘whistle’.”

It's Cockney rhyming slang ^^ (In case you don't know, Cockneys are people from a certain part of London and have a distinctive accent.) The idea is that two words are linked together (flounder and dab), and the latter word (dab) rhymes with the non-slang word (cab) you're trying to represent. Then you drop the latter word in the phrase and just use the former: “Yer’ve gotta make a fuss to get a flounder!”

And so (allegedly), no-one knows what you're talking about and you can have secret conversations that outsiders can't understand.
