“Still hoping to get away with it?”

The warder sneered.

“If Mr. Holmes had deduced someone else was the murderer, he would have informed the police immediately.”

Holmes’s voice travelled out from the bathroom.

“It’s not that I’m vain…”

“Of course not...” Watson studied the Sussex Chronicle’s racing page.

“But one single grey streak looks ridiculous!”

Holmes opened the door.

“What do you think?”

“I think…”

The dye was all over the towel, the sink—and Holmes’s ears.

Watson smiled.

“...it’s still a splendid mane of hair.”

Although quite what Mrs Hudson will say to the state of the towel (which no doubt will turn out to be Watson's) is another matter.

I can understand Holmes wanting to wait and do the big reveal to the Colonel, but he really should have made it clear to Gregory that Simpson was definitely innocent ^^"

Yeah, poor Fitzroy. But I love that Holmes dyes his hair. I think it's totally IC and the towel! Even if it was a hotel, it was still Watson's towel, somehow.

Holmes does imply earlier that he thinks Simpson is innocent, and the last time he sees Gregory he tries to put him on the right track to find the solution on his own. But he never comes straight out with it and says Simpson is definitely innocent ^^"
