During the reading of John's will, I idly imagined the so-called Mrs. Derbyshire wearing the dress Mr. Holmes described: luxuriant dove-grey silk, ostrich-feathers caressing her throat and wrists—

I glanced away, my pulse quickening, and cursed.

John had used us both poorly: surely that was sufficient introduction? I invited her to meet the horse that had unwittingly avenged us both.

Perhaps there will be much horseback riding together in their future. Not every costume Mrs. Derbyshire owns can be trimmed with ostrich feathers, can it?

Goodness knows, there's no proper reason for the two of them to be enemies, and certainly not at this point. It was Straker/Derbyshire who deserved a good kicking, and he's already gotten it.

DEFINITELY curious, yes! I liked castiron's piece with them sharing details of their marriage documents, too. :-)

Impossible to say whether they'd get on or not -- we know so little of the one, and far less of the other! -- but I can just as easily imagine it going this way as an after-the-fact rivalry. And I enjoy imagining this option more than the other. ;-)

Wouldn't it, though? So very many different stories that could be told there, it seems to me.

Speaking of, there's one of Coules Further Adventures that feels to me like a riff in this direction. Not in terms of emotional tenor, but in terms of the secret families exerting their will about this whole secret family business.
