What a poignant little moment, and what an interesting aspect of the story to look at.

The nurse has essentially acted as Lucy's mother for three years and now the little girl's abruptly back with her actual mother and her stepfather. I assume the nurse is happy mother and child are reunited, and perhaps it's a relief she doesn't have that full responsibility any more. But she must be wondering what her position will be now, and she must be worrying she's going to lose contact with Lucy. When she's talking to the cat, I suppose she's actually trying to reassure herself.

Her story's probably an interesting one, moving from Scotland to the U.S. and then suddenly back to England. I hope the next chapter's a happy one for her!
