He’d always been bustling, stoutish, red-faced, nearly purple after a bit of exercise.  Mates still fondly called him “Red” after a few pints.  All to the good.  People wanted to help poor, pink-faced bumblers like White Mason.

“More farmer than detective,” Holmes muttered, waving him away the first day.  White smiled, satisfied with his disguise.  Then Holmes winked. Just once.

I do like to think Holmes would never judge anyone on their appearance. And I love that White Mason is secure enough in his own intelligence to try and make use of people's erroneous conclusions about him, rather than get annoyed.

Aww! I am reading VALL for the first time and really enjoying both Mr. Mac and Mr. White Mason-- as does Holmes, it seems. And I bet Holmes has an excellent wink, just the right size and speed.
