I am very tired of being exiled to this university town, having been forced to find lodgings with a landlady who had not learnt of Holmes’ reputation.  Moreover, Lestrade is such a deuced bad correspondent I have scarcely heard from him.  And any more of Holmes’ clever remarks I may dig up the rose bed and bury him in it.

Oh no. Everyone is out of sorts, including the new landlady. I can imagine Lestrade not being the best correspondent.

Not an easy time. And one brief note every fortnight is not very satisfying for Watson.

I do like the thought of Holmes and Watson having to search further and further afield for a landlady willing to take them ^___^ And I rather admire the doctor's restraint during this case ^^

They do say bad news travels fast - and in this case also far ;)

Watson was remarkably restrained - although Holmes did notice him looking thoughtfully at the roses once or twice.

There must have been a newspaper column, "Bad Tenants," for landladies to both vent and to warn each other should the culprits come seeking lodgings.

Might Holmes be pining for Hopkins? Not that it would excuse those clever remarks of his, but it seems he and Watson might be something of a matched pair in their testiness just now.

One suspects that may quite possibly have been true. And although Hopkins was better at correspondence than Lestrade, it had been a particularly busy time for him.
