“It was a prolonged altercation, yes.” Watson took a sip of brandy, his cheeks red from the fire.

Holmes beamed. “Watson was an invaluable aid in that struggle. I nearly expired in his arms.”

I love to think of H & W doing this as a deliberate game - see exactly how far and how explicitly they can talk about their relationship without the inspector 'sussing' that 'sex' is going on.

Possibly when Lestrade marries himself he'll catch on - and in the middle of the night, 6 years and eight months later he'll put two and two together, bolt up in bed, and yell "OH MY GOD!"

I absolutely love the idea of them deliberately dancing as close as they can to the truth of their relationship in front of their dear, dense, conventional police friend.

And I was chuffed as hell when I came up with the title!
