I knew he would not appreciate my asking, but my curiosity was too great to refrain. “Why?”

As ever, my friend read my mind. “Why accept the cheque?” He held it up. “For one, we earned it. For two, he can afford it. And for three…” His voice softened. “Old hounds such as we cannot run forever, my dear fellow.”

Aw, thank you so much!!! I realized from the story's internal chronology that this had to be one of the later cases - post 1900 - and thinking about Holmes referring to himself and Watson as two old hounds... It just all jelled from there. :-)

I only read other people's takes after I've done my own, and I find it interesting just how many of us went straight for that cheque as something to write about. Mine is extremely similar to this. It's interesting how sometimes our thought processes are wildly different, and sometimes they're very similar.

That cheque really does attract attention and the imagination, doesn't it? I too was struck by how many of us were compelled to write about it. :-) I think it's because for most of us, we know that it's late in Holmes' career, so he's probably not poor as he claims - and it does fly in the face of his often-stated 'doesn't take big fees, only interested in the work' preferences.
