I could not deny it. “I was surprised that you took the duke’s check so… eagerly.”

“I spoke to him in the only language he understood,” Holmes said. “He expected avarice from others, so avarice I gave him. Else he would not have trusted me with his secrets.”

Oh, yeah, I like this very much. That was driving me nuts -- why would Holmes care so much about just money? But this makes so much more sense!
