“Splendid disguise, Holmes!” I said. “A pitch-perfect American accent. The false peg-leg’s a nice touch.”

“What was that, Watson?” came Holmes’ voice from his room.

I turned back and smiled sheepishly at our furious client. “Please stop pointing that at me.”

I finally read it once I was safely out of college and didn't have to write a paper on its Essential Themes.

"Captain, do refrain from skewering my Boswell."

Ahab looks up into Holmes' eyes, and realises that his own insane, obsessive hunt for Moby-Dick would look like a game of hide-and-seek next to the vendetta Holmes would wage if he hurt Watson. Down goes the harpoon.

"Thank you. Tea?"
