A lot of Doyle's SH stories seem to take a swipe at contemporary legal situations in England (especially those concerning women and money).

When you write Holmes/Watson you have to deal with legal ramifications of the time - and Sterndale's rant reminds you that other people suffered under that draconian code too.

Hard to fight laws that were originally created to keep landowning in the hands of a few powerful men - including marriage laws to prevent land being dispersed among other wives and children.
