In the beginning, when still a mystery, I found him merely intriguing. While he was my friend and colleague, there was exhilaration and exasperation both. When he was gone from me, he was a blessed memory.

Now that I know him as well as one soul, one heart - one body - may know another: now, he is truly magnificent.

You shouldn't feel that way. If the story inspired you to take that angle, that's the way you should go. And why would you ever be sorry for making such beautiful little love stories?

I don't think it's cheating at all! I'm firmly in the "ACD was writing in code/hiding their true relationship" camp. And, anyway, it's lovely!

Not "sorry" exactly, otherwise I wouldn't have posted, but for me, the challenge of this project is to find something very story-specific, even if it's a tangential angle, and write to it.

Ah, I'm in the other camp: "ACD definitely meant them as no more than friends, but public domain, baby". Both work :-)

ETA: not that I think being friends is "lesser" in any way.

Fair enough, and that is something I do for myself as well, actually. But I try to be encouraging for whatever anyone wants to bring to the table.
