At first Mrs Straker had been afraid that with her husband’s death she would lose both home and livelihood.  But Colonel Ross had been magnanimous after Silver Blaze’s notable victory in the Wessex Cup and engaged her to remain as housekeeper for the three stable lads.  And now the new trainer was a handsome widower.  Things were indeed looking up.

I had a theory that possibly Mrs. Straker may have had something to do with the crime. Did her husband encourage her to make a curry that night or did she do it as her voluntary part in the business?
