SOLI -- The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist

"It is part of the settled order of Nature that such a girl should have followers," said Holmes…

It is equally true that such attractive, active, and gifted individuals are often oblivious to the attention they excite. In Miss Smith’s case, she was somewhat aware of her admirers, although she underestimated their interest. In my Watson’s case – as active, happy, and busy as I could make him after my return, and naturally modest – he usually failed to notice.

Watson may fail to formally notice, but I think he certainly appreciates it. But poor Holmes, gently courting in his way, forever doomed to be ignored. Maybe Watson will get the message one of these days...

I just love your Holmes and Watson so much. Their relationship with each other is always so charming (if a bit sad today).

Or maybe he's so happy with Holmes that he has no reason to note others' interest. ;-) It's all a matter of interpretation, isn't it?

Watson's modesty is (with a few notable exceptions) one of his most consistent - and charming - characteristics in canon, I think. :-)
