This is an interesting part of their relationship, isn't it? I doubt that Holmes could be that successful without Watson, but I think most benefits lie in the psychological reassurance it states.

Thank you for commenting. I believe that Holmes was more successful because he had Watson to watch his back, offer his support, and be a sounding board for his ideas and deductions.

I love the duality here, almost a catch-22. The danger certainly must be severe indeed for Holmes to not want to bring Watson along, but at the same time, that's all the more reason Watson would never let him go alone.
