I guess the affection which one brother showed for the other should have moved me, and indeed it held some fascination, on a professional level. I would not have allowed myself similarly deep emotions for Mycroft though, and to imagine him exert anything close to sentiment bordered on ridiculousness. Sending a mere Christmas card might have overpowered dear Mycroft’s capabilities.

I wonder if it did. Mycroft did seem a little more than involved in "The Final Problem".

This made me think of the scene in BBC's Sherlock.

"Oh, dear Lord. We're not going to have Christmas phone calls now, are we?"

I wonder what Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes would be like if they were closer. Perhaps their relationship changes over time, once Holmes experiences a closer brotherhood firsthand with Watson.

After I had finished this, I remembered the same scene, but just couldn't come up with anything to replace it. The law about phone calls is even one of my favourite jokes in the show, d'oh!

In the canon, or the BBC show?
I think their relationship changes in both. In the books, Mycroft hardly seems to be present in Sherlock's life, he even keeps him successfully hidden from Watson up to that certain point. But after that, Mycroft helps them during the whole Reichenbach business. The TV show had even more of that, with Mycroft almost becoming part of the Bakerstreet family (Though I found it remarkable that he wasn't at the Christmas party. I was sure that Mrs Hudson at least would invite him, but would he come?). From a livechat with the writers, I understand that they're not inclined to show what caused the break between the brothers, but more glimpses into their family story will hopefully follow. Darn it, their show kindled my interest in Mycroft's character in the first place! ;P
