Canon Story: A Study In Scarlet
Title: Limits
Rating: PG
A/N: Allowing myself 100 words for this one, as it's a novel and Holmes refused to be concise.

John Watson — his limits.

1. Biology & Anatomy. - Extensive, especially in regards to medicine.
2. Other Sciences. - Average. Tendency towards useless trivia such as planetary motion.
3. Crime. - Feeble, but developing. Shows a keen interest.
4. Literature. - Mainly action novels. Wishes to inflict his own writing on the population.
5. Philosophy. - Despite experiences in war, persists in believing in the goodness of humanity. Curious.
6. Is an excellent shot and a handy brawler.
7. Has the grand gift of silence. Invaluable as a companion.
8. Uncommonly handsome.

This list fails to accurately portray Watson. Begin to suspect I will never get his limits.

Canon Story: The Sussex Vampire
Title: Ghosts
Rating: PG
A/N: This one's a bit of a leap forward from the text. And, uh, angsty.

No ghosts need apply, he said in jest so many years ago. Now I stand in the dark outside his cottage, watching as he trails his fingers over the writing I was doing as my heart failed, and wish that he was less rational and more open to the other side, so that I might yet communicate with him.

Oh, your ghost story... Fantastic as well as fantastical. I love the angst -- I always do. There's so much here in just 60 words. Holmes, mourning in the cottage, quietly and alone, and Watson watching and knowing he has no way to contact him, as closed to other possibilities as Holmes is. Tragic. It begs for expansion!

(And don't give up, Watson! You're not one to give up when Holmes needs you -- make him see you!)

Yes, this is angst while not being hopeless. Who better to change that mind than the man who knew it and loved it for so long? Who better to find a way through the lines than a soldier? And who would be more likely to have an outward gaze toward a missing companion than a desperately lonely man?

The story is beautiful.

And Holmes never did get to Watson's limits.

The second one is sad, but lovely.

The two together show how much they need each other.
