Had Holmes cause to continue perusing the index past vampires we should quickly have come upon: Viceroy of India, missing black pearl; Victoria (Queen), polite rejection of medal; Viking manuscripts, discrepancies of dating in British Museum; Virginia, home of the infamous Philip Mahone seller of bogus railroad shares; and lastly Violin and Violinists, which took up fully half the index.

Loved this - can I say as a former librarian, that when I re-read the story just now I felt like yelling at Holmes for filing the Gloria Scott case under V for Voyage? He needs some serious cross-indexing.
