You may think it odd, but my greatest sorrow regarding the events at the Copper Beeches was that I was forced to kill the dog, even though it was something of a mercy. I have a great fondness for dogs, and have owned many. The cruelty of perpetual starvation can make even the noblest of beasts lash out in fury.

Yes, it was typically mean-spirited of Rucastle to make the dog an outlet for his own cruelty, and would be typically kind-hearted of Watson to care.
Good take on the story. It's so interesting to see which bits pop up for each of us.

I really appreciate this, because it was not the poor animal's fault in any way. Watson has a kind heart, and I can easily see him lamenting the necessity of killing an innocent creature. Very good, indeed.

Very much in keeping with Watson's personality, I think. Nicely done!
