As a huge fist was thrust up into Holmes’s face, he didn’t so much as flinch. Danger never seemed to rattle my friend, indeed, he appeared to thrive on it. No matter the situation, he always appeared confident of a successful outcome. Of course, this time, the stout poker in my hand might have played a part in his confidence.

I think Holmes relies on Watson's physical presence a lot, given how often he asks him to bring the revolver (if not to throw it into an experiment), but he obviously enjoys the excitement of it, too - and Watson might be a part of that, no? ;)
