“Birdy Edwards. What a curious nickname, Holmes. From his clear-sightedness, perhaps.”

“Perhaps.”

“I wonder what nickname I might come up with for you. Your given name can be a little off-putting. Something shorter, more friendly...”

“Name me for a bird, Watson, and you are likely to find yourself regarded as a worm. A juicy one.”

After much thought I decided on Goshawk Holmes, although it's no shorter and definitely no friendlier than his given name.

And thus, the stories of Cormorant Holmes were forever lost, except for one allusion Watson dropped into a story....

An excellent suggestion from Watson and a typical response from Holmes. Nicely done:-)

Ravenlock Holmes and John Wormson, at your service.

Come to speak of that, I once saw a postcard illustration of a raven that reminded me hugely of BBC Holmes, black coat and cross face and all.

Oh yes. Holmes!canon taught me that word (I'm not a native speaker of English). Where I come from, the literal translation is "eagle-nose", which corresponds with the English understanding as far as I know, but the original etymology I found simply referred to a dark bird. Well, it's not as if Holmes ever let anybody really look into his family tree, or aerie, so either will do. ;P

*laughing* Nice! Yes, I imagine Holmes wouldn't be too pleased by Watson's chosen nickname. Remember "Tadpole" Phelps from the Naval Treaty?
