Canon Story: The Adventure of the Creeping Man
Title: Roots

He writes that I had no roots. In fact, I had one: a deep tap that threatened to suck nourishment from the healthy root system of a sturdy, flourishing English oak. Time to pluck it up, any gardener would say.

That offending plant would wither into straw now, but it was a desiccated old stick to begin with. Small loss.

Oooh, ouch. Your Holmes in this story really doesn't like himself, does he?

Watson *is* definitely scathing in his assessment of his worth to Holmes in this, yes, and it totally works with the angst fairy. I had quite the visit from the angst fairy myself in this week's drabbles (also about Holmes' retirement, oddly enough; I must have had it on the brain). The one positive note CREE has for me is that Watson is writing about it twenty years after 1903 - which means that a) he survived WWI and b) he's still in touch with Holmes, at least to some degree. :-D

But yes, CREE definitely has ACD's "I'm SO tired of this character" written all over it.
