Author's Notes:1) This is based on the theory from the discussion post that since Holmes was a bit dead during this case, Watson actually tried to investigate it himself. And yes, I admit I can never resist a Reichenbach reference. I'm an addict, I know it.
2) I'm way behind on comments, I know, I'm sorry! So distracted with Olympics and Curiosity on Mars! Fun times for Mr. SM and me.


Eccles came in to see me blustering as much as the spring wind outside, complaining of palpitations, clearly less angina than just acute agitation.

"Singular." "Incredible." "Grotesque."

Words have meaning. I knew that well as a writer even before I was a... detective's trailing assistant? Occasional attempted bodyguard? Well-meaning, incapable friend? What? That was a definition I could not find.

Ahaha, lovely! I like the sharp Watson-wits coming through in this, as well as the doctor's perspective (which the canon stories often lack). And then, in the end, there's that sharp turn from deduction to self-analysation. He's as good as there.

I love Watson. He's a rich character that we see mostly at angles in these canon stories. He doesn't often write about himself directly, so we gather what we know about him through his interaction with Holmes. These 60s give me a way to look a little deeper into him.

Quite right. I'm back at the Reichenbach well again here -- try as I might, if I catch an angle to it in a story, my brain latches onto it. There's just so much in there to explore. Hope I'm not driving everyone nuts with it! :)

He does, indeed. He's such a wonderful character. I wish I could meet him in real life. Good, decent, helpful people are all too rare in reality.

Ah, but he doesn't know that yet. See, that's why I always get sucked into 60s referencing Reichenbach. There's just so much there: loyalty and betrayal, cruelty and kindness, mourning and reconciliation. My angst-loving soul craves this kind of stuff. :)
