Children are impressive creatures. They never do anything without purpose, and they will not do voluntarily what is of no apparent use to them. Even the seemingly pointless game of a child will, upon inquiry, be explained in the most confident way. I guess then, from this point of view, my way of life may be called childlike as well.

That's an interesting take, especially as Watson doesn't seem to have all his marbles together either (hello bull pup). *lol* In my universe of Bakery Street's Consulting Cupcakes, Shirley Holmes is a mix of Peter Pan, Miss Marple (Margaret Rutherford interpretation) and a Phasmatodea, while Jane Watson keeps a pet jellyfish named Splint and has experiences with guys from three continents, involving Scotland Yard. There is SO much fun to be had... but I'm afraid that's nothing for the 60s.

The egg sandwich had me rolling. Big tomato will follow me for a while. *LOL*

Ahem. To come back to the actual point of this, I think that Holmes is such a logical and straightforward thinker that while he may theoretically understand the means and ways of adult society, appreciating and justifying them for himself isn't always an option. I like him that way. I like his untidiness, and sitting with his knees at his chin (okay, I do that too =P), and grossing Watson out, and having a sense of justice where one wouldn't expect it to be so strong.

Oh God Rambles. I'm so sorry. Just baked/ate a LittleMissMoriarty!muffin, if that counts for an explanation.

Yes, that sense of being unmindful of society's conventions is a childlike quality. Fits Holmes quite well:-)

I do; I think it extends to him not thinking of the consequences and emotional toll of faking his own illness, faking his own death, hiding in a hut in Dartmoor...

He ignores strain and pain more than often when it suits his purposes, and I'm afraid he might show egoism in not taking Watson's feelings into account more than often, though he does apology once the damage is revealed. That also struck me as remarkable childlike in him.

Yes, kids tend to wait for the reaction before deciding if an apology is needed...or for someone to point out that an apology is in order!
