Children are impressive creatures. They never do anything without purpose, and they will not do voluntarily what is of no apparent use to them. Even the seemingly pointless game of a child will, upon inquiry, be explained in the most confident way. I guess then, from this point of view, my way of life may be called childlike as well.

Ahem. To come back to the actual point of this, I think that Holmes is such a logical and straightforward thinker that while he may theoretically understand the means and ways of adult society, appreciating and justifying them for himself isn't always an option. I like him that way. I like his untidiness, and sitting with his knees at his chin (okay, I do that too =P), and grossing Watson out, and having a sense of justice where one wouldn't expect it to be so strong.
Oh God Rambles. I'm so sorry. Just baked/ate a LittleMissMoriarty!muffin, if that counts for an explanation.
