Canon Story: The Gloria Scott

A/N: *waves* Hi guys. Good to meet you. This is my first 60 for 60 and my first ever ACD fic so please be kind.

“As friendless as I,” he said to Watson.

Offhand, as if it was a mere coincidence of their friendship such as a shared love of Wagner or Spanish wine. Not that it had been this incredible discovery, that another person had as great a sense of interminable, miserable loneliness as he, that had been the core that drove them together.

*Waves back* Very pleased you've come.

This is lovely - it gets straight to the core of Holmes life at university.

Love this. The way Holmes is always so casual about his friendlessness always makes me want to hug him - not just here, but in the later story where he says "Apart from yourself, I have [no friends]." That level of 'no one likes me and I have accepted it and moved on' always makes his friendship with Watson seems so much more special.

Canon in a nutshell, aye? ;) I think the theme of loneliness is what keeps the whole narrative together, binds the main characters to each other (in one way or the other), and makes them what they are. Very well expressed!

The thing which really struck me this time through was how fond Holmes is of his friends. He forms them only rarely, but he is truly invested in his friendships once he does. Your ficlet highlights that nicely. Well done!

Welcome, welcome! It's always good to see a new face -- thank you so much for joining us! I'm the mod around here, so if you need anything, please let me know. :)

You hit it out of the park your first time out too. You pack a LOT of character punch in such a small space here. Fantastic work! Looking forward to more next week!

Oh, nice! I was wondering what it was that Holmes and Trevor had in common, and your fic presents a very poignant concept for that.

Love this story written off of Watson's reaction to one line. But it is such a powerful line. It struck me quite hard when I read it. And you did such a good job exploring it!

Hello!
Such a sad thought; not only without friends but almost regarding himself as unworthy of friends. Nicely put:-)

It's interesting that Holmes seems drawn to lonely, friendless people like himself: Victor and then Watson. His casual acceptance of that is really quite tragic.

Welcome! I love this observation - it very poignantly underlines Watson's understanding of and affection for Holmes. Lovely.
