Canon Story: The Gloria Scott

Title: Matters of the Heart

Author: Mary Sutherland

Rating: PG

The day I gained my profession was that on which I almost killed a man with my deductions. It was generous of Mr Trevor senior to speak with such exaggeration of my ability, when my trifling insights had struck him down almost mortally. His weak heart did not long survive that encounter. Nor did my friendship with his son Victor.

I like it: a summary of both triumph and failure.

certainly a shock to the poor older Trevor. Holmes was probably not the easiest of fellows to relax with over the summer holidays. Yet an invaluable holiday nonetheless for setting Holmes on the track of his profession. Great writing!

What struck me about GLOR is that Holmes loses possibly more than he gains. That really comes across here.

Ouch. This one has some sting. Holmes' gifts are a double-edged sword. That young, he hadn't learned quite yet how best to handle the weapon. Excellent insight.

In fact, excellent first 60! Welcome to our comm -- we're glad you've joined us! I'm the mod here, so let me know if you need anything. Can't wait to see what you'll have in store for us next week. I have such a soft spot for thoughtful angst, and this delivers.

It seems very like Holmes to be aware of the cost of his triumph, not just in terms of the elder Trevor, but also with respect to Victor. Very nicely done!

So well done here with Sherlock feeling guilt over Trevor's reaction to his initial deduction. I love that! It is the first moment where you see the double edged sword of his particular gift and you will see it so many times in future. Love.

Everything appears to come with a price. An interesting view.

Down to the point, expressed in a nutshell. Very accurate!

I love the little hint of Holmes' false modesty (which he seems to turn on and off like a tap). Lovely.
