Canon Story: The Gloria Scott
Title: The Hunt

A/N: My second round of 60s will concentrate on the Moriarty family, which I've based on canon as far as possible, but tweaked a lot due to gaps in canon. You can find a family tree and some explanation in my journal, but please feel free to ask, too.
This story is told from Jane Moriarty's point of view, one of James's younger sisters. In my timeline James Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes share the same year of birth, making 1874 one year before Moriarty's scientific breakthrough.

1874 was a remarkable year, for all of us. Two young men found their way, one of them directly, the other one by discovering science as the perfect cover for his actual interests. In this year my brother James announced the title of his upcoming publication, finally bringing me back on his trace. It was the year the Hunt began.

Excellent idea, and great way to keep things fresh and original on a second trip through the books -- it puts me a bit in mind of The Hounds of D'Urbervilles (though, that is certainly more played towards parody) or Moriarty Papers -- both of which I've always liked because I enjoy people taking the time to explore and interpret the lesser characters -- I am really looking forward to this.

((Also, I checked out your family tree, and I love the way you worked around the fact that Prof. James has a brother who was also named James :P. At that point in the canon I was always a bit like "Dude, ACD, you're just not trying anymore.")

I think I've heard about the first when I looked up what's regarded as canon for Moriarty (which is refreshingly little, basically nothing that wasn't in the stories - quite unlike Holmes and Watson, who got the crap deducted out of them), but didn't go any further in order to keep myself unbiased. ^^" That's a terrible aspect of writing in well-trodden paths, it keeps you from discovering new lit. *lol*

That's such a terrible, terrible fuss, isn't it? XD;; At first I wanted to keep it as a joke, after all these thingies might become a comedy series (suits me better). But then the whole family history in my head went into the deep dark and downright crackpot direction, and there it stayed. Makes it a bit more logic, except that naming yourself after your brother if you don't like your father's name is just as bad, haha. But it's probably easier to pull off.

Every time that topic comes up, I imagine what ACD would have given for ctrl+F. *LOL*

He's frankly a joke in canon if you look at how little page-time he gets, so I thought it a good way to gain more writing material by filling up a few blanks - for the good or the hilarious. ;P

Thank you! :) I had invented the characters of his sisters for other purposes before, but never worked the full story into canon. It was time to get over my laziness, haha.
