A/N: This is based on Baring-Gould's theory that the "one winter's night" referred to in the opening of the story takes place following Watson's return to Baker Street after the death of his first wife.

Although Watson is back where he belongs, I can see that grief still weighs heavy on his heart. I know, only too well, how those darker emotions can leach one’s surroundings of light and joy. I would see his good humor rekindled; indeed, my own equilibrium depends on it. Perhaps this early case of mine will light that fire again.

YES. I love this one. What's not to love? Baring-Gould theory and Holmes trying to help Watson in his own way (and getting what he needs at the same time). Awesome.

"Back where he belongs" is so Holmes. It could be arrogant, but I think it's just him. Him in essence. To be honest, I like this trait in him, it's something one can relate to. Also, this deep consideration for Watson is very heartwarming to see. Just what I needed right now, too. *shoves Watson aside on the sofa*

I definitely see Holmes like that - he was never very happy about Watson's marriage and domestic endeavors, so it makes sense that he would believe that Watson belonged with him at Baker Street. :-)

Oh wow, this is lovely! I personally had imagined Holmes opening up a bit to Watson with this case a lot earlier in their personal timeline, but I like this take on it very, very much.

Thank you! I'm really pleased that you liked it. I'm only beginning to get into Baring-Gould, but I guess there's a lot of controversy over how many wives Watson had and when. But I do like the idea that Holmes would try to distract Watson with an old case.
