The candle illuminating the bedroom window finally blinked out, leaving only the room beneath lit. Holmes checked his watch and noted the time. An average woman takes ten to twenty minutes to fall asleep; he’d give it a round half-hour, then. Exactly thirty minutes and four cigarettes later, he stepped to the threshold, smoothed his hair, and rang the bell.

The story of the Crooked Man really isn't terribly interesting, unfortunately, but the way Watson is recruited certainly is. I think that accounts for the common focus in many of our 60s this week.

I just had this mental image of Holmes waiting for the right moment, a little nervous his gamble wasn't going to work given Watson's newlywed status, and wanting to take every precaution to help ensure it would. I'm happy you liked it!

Oh, poor Holmes, on the outside looking in and waiting for Mary to leave his Watson alone. I love the way he smoothed his hair first. The thought of him just a little bit nervous is wonderful.
