Canon Story: Study in Scarlet
Title: Eulogy

Warnings: Possible bad taste, but not much else.
Author's Notes: So my first two ficlets were dark; I decided to switch it up. Thanks to impulsereader for taking a look and boosting my confidence.


“Watson, this is absurd!”

“Some compassion, please, Holmes.”

“My feet are frozen.”

“I told you to put on slippers.”

“You failed to say we would be outside.”

“I would have thought the activity implied it.”

“A murderer should not attend the funeral.”

“You promised Mrs Hudson.”

Holmes sighed, opened the Bible, and began. “Friends, we mourn the passing of Rover...”

Love it. I always feel sorry for that dog, but I'll feel better now I know Holmes was forced to attend its funeral.

(It's worse in the Russian series where the dog is fit and healthy and seems to be Lestrade's pet. Poor thing)

Why does it not surprise me that the Russian version has Holmes killing off a healthy dog, and Lestrade's pet no less? (I say with all affection, mind.)

I've never been able to watch or read anything without worrying about the animals. I spent most of Total Recall worried about the fish. I had to get Holmes to attend the dog's funeral! :)

Not bad taste, just a bit silly -- the perfect amount. I love that you brought up the poor dog and gave his sad appearance such a funny little ending. I can see this scene in my head, and it is hilarious.

Thanks! I couldn't help but feel sorry for that poor dog - I was really surprised that Sherlock fed him the pills and no one seemed to react! (But then, I spent most of Total Recall worried about the fish, so....)

Ah, fantastic! The dog-lover in me was always so sad at the way the dog was used in this story :( Though it's far worse in the Russian series when it's Lestrade's healthy pet dog who is killed!

I'm glad Watson made Holmes attend its funeral. "A murderer should not attend the funeral" is a brilliant line.

Thanks! Apart from FEELINGS about the Mormon bit, mostly all I was left with at the end of the book was shock that Holmes actually killed a dog. I don't know that he would have referred to himself as the dog's murderer, but there wasn't another concise way of putting it!

Awww, sweet and funny. I felt quite bad for the dog in this and I took specal note of what care ACD took in pointing out that it was a dying dog and it was a kindness but still I was like... poor, dog... So this was a nice bit of it, nice indeed! Made me laugh, lovely.

I felt exactly the same way. (Man, if I'd read the Russian version first, I might not have been able to continue.) But I've been known to spend entire movies worried about the animals in the background, and I'm always relieved to see that line in the credits about "no animals were harmed in the making of this film".

I can't imagine a murderer ever would attend the funeral - at least, not when everyone knew he had done it.

Nicely done! I did feel bad that Holmes killed the dog, although I did remember Stamford's line about him being the sort of person who would give a roommate some concoction, just to see what the effect would be. But I'm glad that Watson wouldn't let him get away with it in your story.

Thanks! I worry about animals in movies - I spent most of the original Total Recall very upset about the fish. So I was really upset about the poor dog. I had to make Holmes pay for it somehow!
