Canon Story: The Speckled Band

A/N:SPEC is another favorite of mine, but there is a key fact that is never addressed: the demise of, apparently, Helen Stoner some eight years after the events. Watson, oddly, provides no further clues to her "untimely" death.

"Holmes! Did you see?" I huffed, hurrying upstairs.
"Yes"
I entered the room with the paper. "What tragedy!"
"Mrs. Armitage, née Stoner, dying in childbirth is tragic to those who, as yourself Watson, draw affectionate ties. For me, abhorred by such emotion, 'tis equally tragic having my saving work undone. I suppose you are now free to publish your tale."

This is sad, I hadn't thought much about her eventual fate. I love the contrast in reaction and emotion; nicely penned:-)

It's particularly interesting to me how he immediately gets Watson's thoughts directed into yet another direction. ;)

I thought about this as well. But, on a more positive light, Holmes gave opportunity for probably the best eight years of her life. I like to imagine she had three children - one, at least, named in honor of Holmes and Watson :-P
Based on the timeline in this story, she would have died at the age of 40 - which isn't terribly young for that time period.

Hm, interesting! I like how both of them are sad at her death for entirely different reasons. And how apropos that it is Holmes that immediately thinks about Watson being able to publish.

You know I really couldn't tell the sensitive reason that Watson couldn't publish before he did and that is plausible the death of Helen Stoner. I like the idea of working that out. I like it very much!


But I find myself a Watson and being quite sad for Mrs. Armitage.
