The Bully by [livejournal.com profile] mistyzeo
Canon Story: The Speckled Band
G - no warnings.

Holmes has never been interested in women, but neither has he ever turned down a client on the basis of her sex. His expression was serious during Miss Stoner's narrative, and when he caught sight of the bruises on her wrist he became downright determined. He may not care overmuch for the fairer sex, but Holmes absolutely hates a bully.

And very much so! Watson may say what he wants about the "machine" he lives with, but to me Holmes is more of a philantropist than most of his contemporaries.

So very typical of Holmes! Underneath his often cool exterior he cares deeply about people. It's probably why he's reserved around new people and reluctant to develop new friendships. When he commits to someone, he invests deeply.

Exactly right. And Roylott is one of the worst bullies in the canon, imo. Excellently stated.

Well spotted and commented upon. Holmes is perfectly respectful of all his female clients and should be complimented for his willingness to treat them equally with their male counterparts.

Precisely right. He does not tolerate cruelty and injustice and will defend those suffering it. The definition of heroism.

Very true. I wonder if he is more annoyed that the bully exists, or that the bully exists and does injury to women?

Oh, I love this! Holmes doesn't get enough credit, I think, for his chivalry. He may not be very interested in women or romance, but you're right, he will absolutely not stand for bullying or mistreatment.

You know I'm not sure how much thought Holmes would give to a person's sex one way or another but I very much liked his caring more about the bullying than the client because that seems very well true.
