Canon Story: The Speckled Band

Title: When a Doctor Goes Right

Author: Mary Sutherland

Rating: PG

"When a doctor does go wrong, he is the first of criminals. He has nerve and knowledge" – Sherlock Holmes, The Speckled Band

My friend Watson's knowledge is sometimes a little shaky: one might expect a man who has spent time in India to recognise a swamp adder by sight. But there can be no doubt about his nerve. A man who will sit in perfect silence all night in a darkened room awaiting an unknown danger is surely a companion beyond price.

Aw! Glad you brought out that there are good doctors too :-)

I always have time for some badass Watson. He is s stalwart and solid. Good old Watson, indeed.

Holmes does appreciate his one friend.
I am still musing where to go with my tidbit; this was one of the aspects I considered, both the 'doctor goes wrong' quote and the fact that Watson should have known what the snake was given that he had been in India.

Hm. I suppose Watson should have been educated as to what the snake looked like even if they weren't all that common a find in reality. Still, I must say that it is much more difficult to understand what you are looking at when you aren't expecting to see what you are looking at. That's just me speaking as someone who takes a while to catch on to things... :-) I'm firmly a Watson, apparently.

Perfectly, elegantly woven with the dialogue.

Perfect title. Holmes has the example of both, here: Roylott as the worst and Watson as the best. I love reading pieces where Holmes appreciates his companion. :-)

I love, love, love the contrast between Watson and that line about Roylott. Love it. All of the calmness in the world brought out from Watson's career and no doubt battlefield experience. Such a good point. Well done!
